PB&J

RICHMOND, VA (SafeCITY) – A Richmond woman is accused of trying to kill her husband. The weapon of choice? A peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

Police say 30-year-old Shanta Cruddus, poisoned the sandwich. This happened Friday around 5:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of 29th Street. Her husband said this is at least the third time his wife put something in his food with ulterior motives. Tonight, he's actually coming to her defense, hoping to protect her and their four children.

Shanta and her husband Michael have been together for 15 years. But this past Friday police believe she tried to kill him with a tainted PB & J.

"I felt like I was on TV," said neighbor, Ella Jackson. "I ain't never seen that before! The police with guns and stuff at her house!"

Jackson and her daughter live next door to Shanta and Michael. Neither of them believes the attempted murder allegations.

"Stop lying!" yelled Devonica Short. "What? Oh my goodness! That don't even sound like--that don't even sound like something--what??"

Police tell us Shanta gave Michael a PB & J with some type of substance on it. When he bit into he tasted something bitter and called police. Her husband tells us it was a muscle relaxer. No one answered when we knocked on Shanta's front door. But we were able to reach Michael by phone. Surprisingly he didn't believe his wife was trying to kill him either.

"She wanted me to go to sleep because she wanted money and if I was asleep she could go in my pocket and take it," said Michael.

And he tells us this is not the first time. He says she wanted his money to feed a drug habit.

"She's addicted to pain killers," he adds.

One neighbor ran back inside when we asked her about the allegations.

"You're smiling about it," said NBC 12's Evrod Cassimy.

"I don't want to talk about it," replied Jackson.

Shanta's husband says he just hopes she gets the help she needs. He told us in the past he did end up falling asleep and his wife was able to steal his money. He says he's tried to get his wife help before but she refused. Just how much money was this all over? He tells us just $60.

PENCIL IN NECK

Everett, Washington (SafeCITY) - Joshua Monson, a 27-year-old inmate at the Snohomish County Jail, had to be placed in a restraint chair at his court hearing after he allegedly stabbed his attorney in the neck with pencil earlier this week, then proceeded to do the same thing to a replacement attorney that had been assigned to him.

AIDS & RABIES

Minneapolis, Minn. (SafeCITY) - Megan Biersach, a 23-year-old Minnetonka woman and bride-to-be, was jailed after she allegedly became intoxicated at an airport, bit a police officer and told him that she had AIDS and rabies.

According to police, Biersach was awaiting a flight to Salt Lake City where she is due to be married this week, when things turned a little crazy after she became intoxicated at the airport bar.

Biersach reportedly became angry when an agent at the gate refused to let her board her flight because she was drunk and crying.

A bartender at the airport told investigators that he served Biersach three vodka and sevens and three tequila shots during her wait as she conversed with several men at the bar.

Police arrived on the scene shortly after Biersach began creating a disturbance - and that's when things became interesting for witnesses who saw Biersach's meltdown unfold.

Investigators say Biersach began cursing and spitting at the officers. She then bit one officer hard enough on the arm to draw blood. Seeing that the officer was bleeding, she informed him that she had rabies and AIDS.

To top things off, Biersach told the officers that the men she had been drinking with at the bar had sexually assaulted her. The bartender later told investigators that there was never a disturbance in the bar and witnesses pointed out that she hugged the men as she headed towards her gate.

Shortly after her arrest, Biersach told police that she had been prescribed anti-psychotic drugs. She was kept on suicide watch while at the jail and consented to a test for AIDS.

She was arraigned on two counts of felony assault on a police officer. The judge agreed to release her without bail after she explained that she was due to be married next Friday and had a groom and 150 guests waiting for her.

SPANKEY

Virginia Beach, VA (SafeCITY) - Henry Fitzsimmons, a 54-year-old Virginia Beach restaurant owner was jailed after he allegedly spanked his employees in exchange for employee privileges and scholarship opportunities.

According to prosecutors, five women have come forward with allegations that Fitzsimmons regularly spanked them over a five-month period - using leather straps, belts and even a horse riding crop.

Investigators say Fitzsimmons bestowed "scholarships" on women who suffered economic hardship with the warning that they would be spanked if they broke the "rules." One woman complained that the spankings caused bruises and welts that were so severe, she was unable to sit down.

Another woman stated that Fitzsimmons lashed her with a leather strap in exchange for a birthday party for her daughter. Two women stated that Fitzsimmons wouldn't allow them to leave until they agreed to beatings that often left bruises and welts on the buttocks.

Fitzsimmons is also accused of sexual battery after he allegedly used objects to penetrate some the women sexually.

Prosecutors claim Fitzsimmons preyed on women who needed financial assistance by providing those women with cash if the agreed to summit to a program of corporal punishment called "The Spencer Scholarship Program."

According to the program, cash assistance would be provided on the condition that if the consenting party broke a rule, they would be subject to spankings on their bare bottom. It further states that spanking techniques can be administered using belts, straps or other kinds of spanking devices.

A person who submits to a "Spencer Scholarship Program" is also required to permit spankings "whenever they feel such discipline would be helpful," according to a website that lists the official guidelines.

Fitzsimmons has been arraigned on two counts of abduction, five counts of assault, three counts of sexual penetration and one count of sexual battery.

In court, Fitzsimmon's attorney told the judge that the case was a concoction masterminded by an opportunistic former employee who stood to gain financially from his arrest. He also stated that the program was consensual and that no party was forced to be a part of the program.

MOUTH SOCKS

Port St. Lucie, Florida (SafeCITY) - Beverly Jean Hutchings-Watts, a 52-year-old Port St. Lucie woman, was jailed after she allegedly beat her 12-year-old adopted son with an extension cord before shoving socks into his mouth and then taping his mouth closed.

According to Port St. Lucie police, the boy was found by officers Sunday around midnight walking alone, dressed in pajamas, and no shoes, about a mile and a half from his home.

He told police that he had been "whooped" by his foster father, and that he was running away to his aunt's house. He described the attack, stating that his foster parents beat him with an extension cord because he had food and something to drink in his room. The boy also said that he was often forced to sleep on a concrete floor in the garage.

Investigators believe the boy exaggerated his story a little, but did find numerous lineal bruises on his back, legs, and buttocks and what looked to be “pick marks” on his abdomen. Documents show the boy has a history of manipulation, defiance, lying, aggression, and other behavior problems.

Mrs. Watts admitted to detectives that she beat him with a belt, not an extension cord, and showed police the belts she used. The injuries the boy sustained were not believed to be from the belts she showed.

Ellenbeth Wachs, 48, of Lakeland, is accused of purposely making noises from inside her home March 13 to pretend as if she were having sex while the boy and his father overheard, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Wachs made the noise in an effort to make the boy stop playing basketball outside her house on Lake Victoria Drive, a complaint affidavit says. She told him to stop shooting baskets because she was trying to sleep.
A Polk County sheriff's detective began investigating after the boy's father, Otto Lehman, filed for an injunction for protection against Wachs in April.
A complaint affidavit says the boy played basketball near Wachs' home about 8:30 a.m. and she yelled through an open window for him to stop.
Lehman and his son, Forrest, returned later and she started to yell "Oh John," repeating it "over and over again and kept increasing the volume until it was a loud scream," according to the complaint affidavit.
Wachs was also moaning and making other sounds that "sounded like a woman experiencing sexual gratification in an extremely loud fashion," the affidavit says. She continued until the father and son left.
On March 3, Wachs was jailed on a charge that she posed as a licensed lawyer. She remained at the Polk County Jail on Tuesday without bail for being arrested while on bail for the previous charge.
John Liguori, a lawyer representing Wachs, said he would schedule a hearing to argue that his client should be released. Wachs, who has multiple sclerosis, requires several types of medication, and her medical needs cannot be properly met while in jail, Liguori said.
He said the State Attorney's Office is using a dispute between neighbors to further prosecute Wachs.
She was trying to get rest after having chemotherapy when she asked the boy to stop playing basketball, Liguori said. He said Wachs was calling to a friend inside her home for help with taking medication.
"There is no simulation of a sex act here," he said. "The kid didn't see anything. Moaning is not a sex act. There is no evidence that a sex act was occurring."
He accused Assistant State Attorney Brad Copley of targeting Wachs on behalf of those who oppose her personal, religious and political views. "For him to deal with something like this is just an extraordinary waste of resources," Liguori said.
In court Monday, Copley denied that Wachs' beliefs were at issue. "We certainly live in a society where a little boy can go outside and shoot hoops," Copley said.
Attempts to reach the Lehmans were unsuccessful.

NAKED CHINA MAN

Changchung, Jilin Province, China (SafeCITY) - An unnamed China man made a hasty getaway this week when Chinese authorities raided an illegal brothel in the city of Changchung.

As police burst through the brothel's front door, the alleged customer left his clothes behind, ran across a rooftop, shimmied down a rusty pipe, and fled down the alleyway. A few women dressed only a towel were also seen following him across the rooftop.

China's flourishing sex industry prompted Chinese officials to launch a nationwide crackdown on prostitution last summer. China's anti-prostitution laws have netted about 250,000 prostitution-related arrests annually in recent years.
