CAVEMAN SUSPECT


Iowa City, Iowa (SafeCITY) - Johnson County authorities are looking for a man resembling this sketch who may be a witness or possibly even a suspect to a house fire.

According to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the Iowa City Fire Department was called to the scene of a fire at an apartment complex at about 11 p.m. on January 29th.

Crews from the West Branch and Coralville Fire Departments as well as three Iowa City Engines and Iowa City Truck 1 worked to extinguish the fire. One fire fighter was injured, sustaining burns to both of his hands.

Crews rescued a dog from a second floor apartment, however, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Investigators say a witness (sketched above) may have been in the area between 10:30 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. He is described as an older white man with a beard and long hair, between 5'10'' and 6'0, and was last seen wearing a dark colored coat and pants. Police believe the witness is a transient from out of town.

Police responded to the same address earlier in the evening after a resident and a “transient” male got into an altercation at a nearby park.

Iowa City CrimeStoppers is offering an award in the amount of $1,000 for any information leading to the arrest of the caveman....err...suspect who committed the arson. Anyone with any information pertaining to the case can contact CrimeStoppers at 358-TIPS (8477).
