SMOKE IT GRANNY

Scranton, Pennsylvania (SafeCITY) - Andrew Demkowich, a 19-year-old Scranton man was jailed after he allegedly forced his grandmother to smoke marijuana, threatened to kill her, and forced her to give him the last of her money.

According to Scranton police, officers were dispatched to Barbara Demkowich's residence on a report of a domestic disturbance.

When officers arrived on the scene, the 74-year-old victim was standing on the front porch crying and repeatedly stating "He's going to kill me."

When officers entered the home, they found Mr. Demkowich sleeping on a chair in the living room with a half-smoked marijuana "blunt" on his lap. Officers noted that the blunt had burned a hole through Demkowich's sweat pants.

Investigators say Ms. Demkowich stated that her grandson had been physically abusing her for the past three weeks, even biting her lip to get her to "shut up." She also told detectives that he forced her to smoke marijuana and write him a check that cleared out her savings account.

When detectives questioned Demkowich, he stated that he demanded the check from his grandmother because he really needed the money. He also stated that she smoked the marijuana because "he wanted her to."

Police were notified when Demkowich fell asleep, allowing his grandmother to call her son.

Demkowich was booked into the Lackawanna County Prison and charged with robbery, simple assault, and drug charges. He remains jailed on $2,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.
