FRYING PAN

Hutchinson, Kansas (SafeCITY) - Kevin Scott Funderburk, a 25-year-old Reno County man was arrested after a 71-year-old woman beat him over the head with a frying pan when he allegedly tried to rape her.

According to police, Funderburk gained access into the woman's home when knocked on the door, pretended he was homeless and told her he had no place to go.

"He was drunk and said he didn't want trouble with police," said police Det. Sgt. John Moore.

Once inside, Funderburk allegedly attacked the woman, forced her to the floor and attempted to rape her. During the struggle, however, the woman reportedly managed to get her hands on a frying pan, which she used to repeatedly strike Funderburk on the head.

"She was fighting for her life," said Moore. "She beat him down with a frying pan."

When officers arrived Saturday morning, Funderburk was found unconscious, lying in his own vomit in the back of the house. Emergency responders transported Funderburk to a nearby hospital where he spent most of the weekend recovering.

Funderburk, who sported a neck brace for his mugshot, was booked into the Reno County Jail on suspicion of attempted rape, aggravated battery, criminal restraint and criminal damage to property. Bond has been set at $55,200.
