PB&J
RICHMOND, VA (SafeCITY) – A Richmond woman is accused of trying to kill her husband. The weapon of choice? A peanut butter and jelly sandwich!
Police say 30-year-old Shanta Cruddus, poisoned the sandwich. This happened Friday around 5:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of 29th Street. Her husband said this is at least the third time his wife put something in his food with ulterior motives. Tonight, he's actually coming to her defense, hoping to protect her and their four children.
Shanta and her husband Michael have been together for 15 years. But this past Friday police believe she tried to kill him with a tainted PB & J.
"I felt like I was on TV," said neighbor, Ella Jackson. "I ain't never seen that before! The police with guns and stuff at her house!"
Jackson and her daughter live next door to Shanta and Michael. Neither of them believes the attempted murder allegations.
"Stop lying!" yelled Devonica Short. "What? Oh my goodness! That don't even sound like--that don't even sound like something--what??"
Police tell us Shanta gave Michael a PB & J with some type of substance on it. When he bit into he tasted something bitter and called police. Her husband tells us it was a muscle relaxer. No one answered when we knocked on Shanta's front door. But we were able to reach Michael by phone. Surprisingly he didn't believe his wife was trying to kill him either.
"She wanted me to go to sleep because she wanted money and if I was asleep she could go in my pocket and take it," said Michael.
And he tells us this is not the first time. He says she wanted his money to feed a drug habit.
"She's addicted to pain killers," he adds.
One neighbor ran back inside when we asked her about the allegations.
"You're smiling about it," said NBC 12's Evrod Cassimy.
"I don't want to talk about it," replied Jackson.
Shanta's husband says he just hopes she gets the help she needs. He told us in the past he did end up falling asleep and his wife was able to steal his money. He says he's tried to get his wife help before but she refused. Just how much money was this all over? He tells us just $60.
